March 14 & 15, 2009

In conjunction with CancerCare Manitoba, 3 Fathoms Scuba arranged a charity dive event in March 2009, raising $40,000 toward cancer research here in Manitoba.

From 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, until 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, 2009, we rotated our divers for a continuous 24 hour period in the deep end of the Elmwood Kildonan Pool on Concordia Avenue. Some divers pledged one hour of their time, others even more; but, for the whole 24 hours, there were at least six or more divers on the bottom.

The fee for each participant was $25, which included an official “DIVE FOR THE CURE” T-shirt, listing all our sponsors on the back. Each participant gathered pledges from their own circle of family/friends. Any participant who raised over the $250 amount, had the option of having their $25 entry fee refunded, and keeping their “DIVE FOR THE CURE” T-shirt.

3 Fathoms Scuba released this event to the general media (TV, Radio, & Newspapers), and media members were invited to visit with the divers underwater during the event (accompanied by our instructors, of course).

Multiple entertainments for the diving participants were set up underwater (checkers, slalom hockey courses, mountain bike races, etc). We opened the event to ALL of our divers, from Scuba Rangers to Junior Divers and Adults.

The wind up for the event was held the following week, on Sunday, March 22, 2009, at the Royal George Hotel at 123 Regent Ave. W. Transcona. Silent auctions were set up for members of the public and divers alike, with lots of diving equipment prizes donated from our major manufacturers. There was live music during the afternoon and evening, compliments of various Winnipeg bands.
